Castles in the province of Rimini
Tourists flocking to Rimini wont' miss the opportunity to visit the splendid hinterland of the city. The glorious countryside of the Montefeltro is punctuated with impressive medieval castles and fortresses that are the ideal destination for those interested in spending pleasant moments in the open air.
This page gathers three different itineraries across the beautiful castles which were commissioned by the Malatesta Family, the lords of Rimini, and the Montefeltro Family, the lords of Urbino. These itineraries are subdivided into distinct areas and can be covered both by car and by bike. They are provided with useful information and suggestions on the major attractions and highlights of the surrounding area.
The three itineraries revolve around Upper Valmarecchia, Lower Valmarecchia and Valconca. The first two can be reached driving along Statale Adriatica and Strada Statale Marecchiese, and develop a short distance from Rimini's city centre, while Valconca is easily accessible from Cattolica along Via Fiume Conca.
Before exploring the castles of the hinterland, tourists won't miss the opportunity to visit Castel Sismondo, which rises just in the heart of Rimini's old town. Commissioned by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta in 1437, it still retains its original fascination. The interior, which has recently been totally renovated, is often the seat for important internationally renowned art exhibitions.
