Marino is the oldest Republic in the history, and, with a total surface of 60 km2, one of the smallest states in the world. Legend has it that it was founded in the IV century, when Saint
Marino, a stone-cutter from Dalmatia, fled to the top of Mount Titano to escape persecutions under the emperor Diocletian and started gathering a small independent community of people. Over the course of the centuries, this community has always protected its independence fiercely.
