Fishing in Romagna

Fishing in Romagna, detailed information on local species and modern fishing techniques.

Fishing in Romagna

Fishing has been a traditional activity of the coasts of Romagna and the Adriatic Sea for many years now. Crystal-clear and provided with shallow waters, the Adriatic Sea is the ideal habitat for numerous fish species, and gives fishermen the possibility to employ different fishing techniques.

The most common fishes of the Adriatic Sea are oily fishes, that include anchovies, sardines, mackerels and many more

A special role is played by white fish too, that includes goatfishes, rock gobies, wels catfishes and further similar species.

Not to be missed is the incredible quantity of molluscs of the Mediterranean Sea, that abounds in mussels, clams, oysters, sea slugs, Venus clams and many more.

Although production has decreased a lot in the last few years, cuttlefish are the most important members of the molluscan class Cephalopoda in Italy and the Adriatic Sea. They are fished through special trawl nets, and constitute the 20% of the annual trawl catch.

Not to be missed are the numerous crustaceans of the Mediterranean Sea, such as mantis shrimps and squilla mantis.

Tecniche di Pesca in RomagnaFishing techniques and fish farming in Romagna

Romagna boasts several different fishing techniques, such as trawling, a method that involves pulling a fishing net through the water behind one or more boats. Heavily dependant on weather conditions, it requires careful consideration.

Trolling, that is especially employed to catch oily fish, is a method where one net is drawn through the water. Fish shoals are often detected through the use of echo sounding.

Angling is a method of fishing by means of a fish hook. The hook is usually attached to a fishing line, and the line is often attached to a fishing rod. Fishing rods are usually fitted with a fishing reel that functions as a mechanism for storing, retrieving and paying out the line. The hook itself can be dressed with lures or bait. A bait indicator is sometimes used.

Float fishing is especially used to fish clams and Venus clams within well-delimited areas.

Underwater mussel fishing includes all activities that can be performed by fishermen registered with the harbour office: in Emilia-Romagna, fishing areas dedicated to molluscs are regarded to be  “production areas of type A, and give fishermen the possibility to catch and eat fishes”.

Fish farming in Romagna

Mariculture involves the cultivation of marine organisms for food in tanks, enclosures, ponds or raceways that are filled with seawater. An example is the farming of marine fish, including prawns, oysters and mussels.

Many areas of Romagna are characterized by large, sheltered, relatively pollution-free lagoons that are perfect for clam farming.
